Google+ Shut Down Invites Function

Google pending current users sending out Google+ invitation yesterday, saying it had generated "insane demand".

Vic Gundotra, the chap leading Google's social network charge, posted on Google+ that the firm had stop the invite function due to high request. CNet News reports that Google+ will soon make available access to developers.

Google has thrown its hat into the social networking ring with Google+. Or rather, it’s throwing the latest of several hats into the ring, the previous hats having been stomped into wads of filthy felt scraps.
The most usual response to Google+ that I’ve heard is, “Good, I hate Facebook.” This is from people already using Facebook.. We’re on Facebook because everyone else is on Facebook. In this way, Facebook imitates life.

We become a member of Facebook because our friends do, and they bug us, and eventually it’s just easier to sign up than not sign up. In short, we all want to be popular, well-loved, well-connected hermits.
Google+ might strike the big time by surfing the wave of Facebook resentment at the same time as eluding dead rats and discarded styrofoam cups

Army Patrol Cap - History

Army patrol cap, also known as a field cap is a soft cap with a stiff, rounded visor, and flat top, worn by military personnel in the field when a combat helmet is not required.

The M1951 Army Patrol Cap, introduced with the M1951 Uniform, was a derivative of the M1943 Field Cap, part of the M1943 Uniform. The M1951 cap was worn in the Korean War, where it became known as the "patrol cap" by the US Army Rangers there.

It was constructed of wind-resistant olive drab cotton poplin, and had a flannel wool panel that folded down to cover the ears and the back of the head. It was soft enough to be worn underneath an M-1 helmet.

After the Korean War, the cap was replaced by the Ridgeway Cap, a stiffened version of the M1951. The hat became famous outside America by being worn by Fidel Castro. The patrol cap was replaced altogether, early in the Vietnam War, with a baseball-like "Cap, Field (Hot Weather)" and the boonie hat.

On June 14, 2011, the ACU became the primary headgear for all Soldiers as the duty uniform headgear - according to Army Directive 2011-11.

Lulzsec twitter

“Tango down – CIA.Gov- for the lulz.” the group taunted on the LulzSec Twitter account. Immediately after the tweet and for the rest of the day the agency’s website loaded slowly or not at all. CIA representatives had no real comment on the events, only that they were looking into it.There is no evidence that sensitive data had been compromised. Service to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency site resumed a more reliable nature once LulzSec showed a little mercy.

“Goodnight twitter. The CIA anti-lizards will probably rise from the packet sea while we rest our shining -yet-saturated power field arrays,” the group tweeted, 4 hours after the attacks began.

Before the CIA site takedown, LulzSec was also redirecting their publicly available 614-LULZSEC request line to many targets’ call centers’, creating a DOS for the phone service. Along with the FBI in Detroit, the hackers’ “phone redirect hive’ hit WOW customer support and HBGary as well as the customer support for magnets.com who reportedly took in 200+ calls a minute.

Over the weekend, the U.S. Senate claimed that LulzSec managed to infiltrate their servers. The hacker group released stolen data, but Senate Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms Martina Bradford released a statement which said the data wasn’t sensitive and was intended for public consumption. On Wednesday the Senate also reported that their website was attacked once again, though it is not clear if this was the work of the LulzSec.

All of this discord comes at the heels of yesterday’s Titanic Takeover Tuesday where several popular MMO’s were hit with DDoS attacks. LulzSec has also hit numerous high-profile sites including SONY, Nintendo, and FBI’s Infragrade, showing off their muscle. Reuters says that security analysts have downplayed these attacks which are only for attention since there hasn’t been any sensitive data lifted.

Real US Skynet

"Earlier this week, on April 19, 2011 at 8:11 p.m., Skynet became self-aware and independent. Two days later, it launched its nuclear attack on the human race. From that point forward, our future really has depended more on John Connor than it has on Barack Obama."

At least, that's the geek's eye view of the universe and of the milestone dates passed this week by Terminator fans everywhere.

What a joke.

Except that also on April 21, 2011, it was announced that President Obama has authorized the use of unmanned robot aircraft to patrol the skies of Libya, blasting our opponents into oblivion in scenes that will seem eerily familiar to James Cameron fans everywhere. The next day, 25 people were killed half a world away in Pakistan by another U.S. drone attack, stirring once again Pakistani anger over America's ability to use squadrons of super-sophisticated unmanned high tech aircraft supported by orbiting networks of U.S. satellite technology to lay waste to primitive mud villages. Just a month earlier, 40 Pakistanis were killed in an attack in North Waziristan that triggered the last round of Pakistani protests against U.S. tactics.

While the real U.S. Skynet may not seem as nefarious as Cameron's fictional concoction -- so far it has not used nuclear weapons, for example -- in many respects it is worse. Because while in Cameron's vision the attacks against humans were carried out by a bloodless, soulless enemy run amok, in reality the attacks represent an effort by actual human beings to use technology to destroy other human beings without actually putting the attackers at risk. While this may be the ultimate in warfare, the over-the-horizon silver bullet that assures the safety of the man or woman pulling the trigger, it is also an approach to warfare that contains not one but several moral hazards.

The first hazard is that if war can be waged without apparent human cost to the attacker, it is clearly more likely to be undertaken. That such a strategy is really one that is primarily available to rich nations attacking poor ones only compounds the problem. But another moral hazard is that such attacks could easily become the first option of indecisive leaders, exactly as cruise missiles have also been in the recent past.  It allows such leaders to appear strong, to flex their muscles but to have very limited downside. That such approaches are really only good for limited purposes -- assassinations, destroying specific targets, adding a pyrotechnic flourish to a rhetorical argument -- is likely to be ignored or downplayed, as is already the case in Libya. The risk is that unlike nuclear weapons which actually are less likely to be used because the costs of unleashing them are so high, unmanned, over-the-horizon weapons are far more likely to be used because the costs are so low -- even when they are not likely to be terribly effective.

Thus, while Cameron's vision of a world devastated by a war between men and machines is as far-fetched as the idea that Arnold Schwarzenegger could either have a lead role in a movie or, more bizarrely, translate such a role into a successful political career, the reality of America's Skynet is not just more unsettling because it is real but because it offers the possibility of a world in which developed nations are both able to and more inclined to impose their will on poor ones because they can do so with very limited downside risk. It could be that in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Libya we are seeing harbingers of a kind of war-making that is likely to spread widely and pose ethical conundrums that as of yet are hardly being debated or acknowledged here in Washington.. also known as Skynet Central.

Kaddafi troops using cluster bombs to attack opposition

Kaddafi supporting troops accused of using forbidden cluster bombs, to stifle opposition fighters in the town of Misrata. However, Kaddafi government denies these allegations.

Through its website, the international organization Human Rights Watch (HRW), headquartered in New York, USA, issued a statement on the use of these weapons, on Friday, after the HRW observers present in Misrata, some areas still controlled by the opposition.

According to HRW, the uses of these bombs known from the evidence of bomb fragments and from interviews with residents and the opposition.

HRW condemned the use of cluster bombs because the bombs were endangering civilians.

Instead, the government denied Kaddafi. "Prove the accusations," said government spokesperson Ibrahim Mussa.

In these sites, HRW provides evidence photographs of bomb fragments that otherwise has been found in certain parts of town Misrata, who attacked with bombs and cannon by Kaddafi forces since last month. From this evidence can be identify that were MAT-120 mortars, 120 mm size made in Spain.

The workings of the bomb thrower were fire with mortars. Following is above the target area, mortars broke into 21 small bombs that spread widely. Small bombs exploded and then spread the projectiles in all directions when on any kind, whether human or inanimate objects.

The bomb was considered very dangerous type of civilians because it is uncontrollable, and spread.

Because of the nature of that kind of bomb, in 2008 created an international agreement on banning the use of Cluster Munitions in Dublin, Ireland. 108 countries agreed on the convention. However, Libya did not sign the convention, as well as U.S., Israel, Russia, and China

Verizon Wireless Advertising Campaign Slogan

verizon wireless

Verizon Wireless is a leading provider of wireless phones and the largest mobile telecommunications network in the United States. Has the largest customer in the 3rd quarter 2010 with 93.2 million subscribers.

Headquartered in Basking ridge New Jersey, this company is a joint venture between U.S. telecom company Verizon Communications and multinational companies from the UK mobile network operator, Vodafone. With a composition of 55 and 45 percent. January 9, 2009, Verizon Wireless acquired Altel Wireless worth of  $ 28.1 million. Acquisition expands Verizon Wireless network.

And like other companies, to launch an advertising campaign, they have a unique slogan to attract buyers. The following is a slogan used by Verizon Wireless from 2000-2011:
  • In 2000, Verizon Wireless advertised they were, for a time, the largest cellular network in the country by showing people using cell phones and then gesturing with two fingers, much like the World War II-era "V for Victory" sign, to show that the person was on the Verizon ("V" or "iN") network. The slogan for Verizon Wireless at that time was "Join in." (Reminiscent of the slogan "Join in" was used in their marketing scheme up to this day. i.e., "iN-calling," "iN-messaging," and even the toll-free number "1-800-2-JOIN-IN.").
  • Starting in 2002 Verizon Wireless adopted the slogan "We never stop working for you," with commercials  depicting a Verizon employee roaming about in strange places continuously asking, "Can you hear me now? Good." (The "employee" is played by stage actor Paul Marcarelli) The "test man" represents Verizon test technicians.
  • In 2005, Verizon Wireless added an "army" of network engineers into their commercials in conjunction with the "test man" and introduced the slogan "It's the Network." to emphasize their network quality. (Verizon Wireless still uses the slogan "We never stop working for you." from time to time — especially on their website, toll-free number, and shopping bags.)
  • In 2008, Verizon Wireless sponsored Korean pop sensation Se7en further helping Se7en trademark his name in America and promote his U.S. debut single that was released in spring 2009. Also in 2008, Verizon Wireless began a new television advertising campaign, with parodies of horror movies (including The Shining), with people trying to scare a main character with tales of a Dead Zone where calls cannot be made, who calmly responds that he or she has Verizon, and then the slogan appears, "Don't be afraid of Dead Zones."
  • In early 2009, Verizon Wireless officially dropped the "IN" campaign. Previously, calls between two Verizon Wireless subscribers were referred to as IN calling, but will now be referred to as Mobile-to-Mobile calling. With this change, Verizon Wireless also renamed their prepaid service Verizon Wireless Prepaid from iNPulse to Prepay. In mid-2009, when the markets Verizon acquired from Alltel began to transition to the Verizon Wireless brand, web ads began to appear showing the test man with Chad, the Alltel salesman character that has appeared on Alltel commercials for the past five years.
  • Late in 2009, Verizon Wireless began ads that made use of the iPhone "There's an app for that" slogan, changing it to "There's a map for that" (see below). They began with maps showing large areas of the United States covered in red to represent Verizon's 3G service, with very limited areas in blue to show 3G service for AT&T, which was required to use the full capabilities of the iPhone.[20] The ads progressively got more aggressive, including one where the iPhone was placed on the Island of Misfit Toys.
  • In 2010 Verizon launched its latest advertising campaign creating the new tagline "Rule The Air." The campaign boasts Verizon's superior ability to "send a strong signal" and early advertisements heavily feature Verizon's range of Android powered smartphones.
  • In 2011, Paul Marcarelli reprised his role as the Verizon Wireless test man to promote the Verizon iPhone 4, slamming AT&T's network when he answers a phone call using the iPhone with, "Yes, I can hear you now."

Next generation of smartphones arrives

Next generation of smartphones arrives
We’re sick of the iPhone, too. Despite antenna issues, Draconian app store rules and an engineered inability to run Flash content, Apple’s flagship smartphone has done to the smartphone market what the Romans once did to Europe.
The good news: Now a marauding horde of smartphone manufacturers under the flag of Google Android are back for their turf, and they’re not just cobbling together iPhone-wannabes anymore. From the world’s first dual-screen smartphone to a phone with all the processing power of a laptop – and a dock that turns it into one – these next-generation smartphones will all bring something totally unique to the battlefield when they arrive soon.

LG Optimus 2x

The pitch: Two is always better than one, which makes the LG Optimus 2x, the world’s first dual-core smartphone, quite a catch. Nvidia’s hotrod Tegra 2 processor enables rich gaming, fluid multitasking and even 1080p video capture. With the HDMI output, you can hook it up to your TV and watch movies on the big screen, in 1080p.
Skeptic’s slant: Apps have to be specially developed to take advantage of the dual-core design, which means few of them will really tap into what the Optimus 2x can do at launch.
Availability: Rumors have the Optimus 2x launching in late March or early April, but LG will launch the Optimus 2x as a “world phone.” That means it won’t be showing up at the store down the street with a hefty subsidy like phones that carriers officially adopt – you’ll have to snag it online, without a contract, for a hefty sum.

Motorola Atrix 4G

The pitch: Plug Motorola’s Atrix 4G into its optional dock and the humble smartphone becomes a 13-inch notebook, giving you a full-size screen, keyboard, and even a separate battery to charge the phone as it sits.
Skeptic’s slant: The optional laptop dock will cost you $500, and because it doesn’t run Windows 7, it does a lot less than a $350 netbook would.
Availability: AT&T will open the Atrix 4G for preorder on February 13, and begin shipping units March 6 or earlier. The phone itself runs for $199 with a two-year contract.

Kyocera Echo

The pitch: When the Echo’s little 3.5-inch touchscreen starts to feel a little cramped, slide it apart and a second identical screen rises up to meet it, providing a combined 4.7 inches of glowing LCD. The two screens allow you to browse side-by-side websites, read an e-mail in one screen while you reply in another, and even play games like The Sims where one screen acts as a controller, similar to the Nintendo DS.
Skeptic’s slant: Not many apps will work with the dual-screen functionality right off the bat, and running two screens at once will cost you big time on battery life.
Availability: Sprint will offer the Echo for preorder within the next few weeks for $199 with contract, but it won’t begin shipping until spring.

Samsung Infuse 4G

The pitch: With a whopping 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus Screen and a body as deep as a pencil, the Infuse 4G will be both the largest and thinnest phone in AT&T’s portfolio. Thanks to HSPA+ 4G, it will also be one of the fastest on the network. And did we mention it shoots 1080p video?
Skeptic’s slant: Sprint’s 4.3-inch EVO 4G already dropped jaws (and stretched pockets) with its screen size. Is a 4.5-inch screen on a phone really practical?
Availability: Samsung’s Infuse 4G will arrive in the second quarter of 2011 exclusively on AT&T.

HTC ThunderBolt

The pitch: Verizon’s first 4G LTE handset will also be the first to support Skype-to-Skype video – with or without Wi-Fi. No more clambering around to find a hotspot when you want to videoconference, and being limited to friends with Facetime. It packs the same jumbo-sized 4.3-inch LCD and 8-megapixel camera as Sprint’s EVO 4G.
Skeptic’s slant: It’s warmed-over EVO 4G on Verizon. On second thought, maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all.
Availability: Rumors once pointed to a Valentine’s Day release, but the latest leaked documents now show “no ETA.”

Most Provocative X-Rays Pinup Calendar

“Miss September” wears stiletto heels as she strikes a pose for the Eizo X-ray pinup calendar.

It seems there is always someone thinking up new ways to shock us. This year’s pin-up calendar features X-rayed not X-rated girls. Yes, you heard me right. Bizarre but true. This 2010 pin-up calendar is the weird brain child of a German advertising agency called Butter. The idea was to promote Eizo’s high-precision displays for medical imaging so they used X-rays to shoot the pin-up models.
The Butter Agency declares that “pin-ups are more often found in auto garages rather than in medical offices.” I’ll say. “Eizo breaks this taboo,” Butter boasts. “This pinup calendar shows absolutely every detail.”

Their ad promotion made quite a splash on the Coloribus ad archive recently. Ever since these bizarre pin-up photos have been making their rounds on the Internet like the bizarre version of a Playboy centerfold.
Apparently, this calendar is a promotion only kind of thing and is not available as an actual calendar though certainly plenty of guys have tried to procure one. When several emailed the company: “Sorry, you can’t get it here. However, we appreciate the impact it has had on Eizo’s U.S. brand recognition,” the company wrote back.
What’s next? First we have skeletal thin fashion models because of eating disorders and the beauty world’s pressure to be too thin. Now we are gonna X-ray them too for display as pin-ups?
