Pada hari Senin 28 February 2011 kemarin, pihak Telkom Indonesia mengadakan soft launching layanan IPTV Telkom di Jakarta.

IPTV merupakan singkatan dari Internet Protocol Television atau tayangan televisi interaktif beresolusi tinggi (high definition/HDTV).

Peluncuran layanan IPTV yang pertama di Indonesia oleh Telkom ini, merupakan upaya Telkom untuk memperkuat bisnis multimedia sekaligus merevitalisasi jaringan kabel Indonesia. IPTV merupakan platform layanan yang merupakan tahap lebih lanjut dari bentuk interaksi multimedia yang ada saat ini. IPTV merupakan teknologi yang menyediakan layanan konvergen dalam bentuk siaran radio dan televisi, video, audio, teks, grafik dan data yang disalurkan ke pelanggan melalui jaringan IP (Internet Protocol).

Saat ini operator IPTV dengan pelanggan terbanyak adalah PCCW (Hong Kong) yang mencapai lebih dari 850.000 pelanggan, dan France Telecom (Perancis) yang mencapai 800.000 pelanggan. Operator lainnya yang sukses adalah Verizon (Amerika Serikat) dengan 600.000 pelanggan. Sementara itu, di tingkat global bisnis IPTV juga memperlihatkan pertumbuhan yang cukup pesat (lihat tabel “Global pay TV Revenue Forecast, 2008-2014).
